SOUTH Woodham Ferrers continued their push for promotion with a 27-0 win against Holt.

The victory kept second placed Woodham five points behind Diss in the London Two North East standings.

And forwards coach Michael Cheyne was happy with how Woodham’s pack were able to dictate the game.

“It was good to see the forwards working hard and winning ball against the head in the set piece which is something we’ve been working on recently in training,” said Cheyne.

“Mentions go to Potu (Leavasa) for stepping into the front row for the first time and Jamie Cox stepping in at 12 for the first time in only his fourth first team game after an early injury to Jake Rawinsky.”

In a Woodham side changed due to injury and unavailability, Andy Williams stepped in at fly half and started quickly with an early penalty.

With 15 minutes on the clock, Williams was tackled just short of the line but with a stretch of the arm he dotted down the ball for the first try of the game after a line out stolen against the throw.

Williams converted his own try for 10-0 before Ryan Gateson added the second try of the game.

He picked the ball up at the base of the maul to throw a uncharacteristic dummy and dive vibrantly over the line to score and put Woodham 15-0 ahead at half-time.

Woodham continued to dominate the game on a muddy and sticky pitch and, not long after half time, the ball found veteran prop Neil Gittos on the wing who touched down in the corner to score.

Williams was then able to end the game just like he started it, scoring again with only a few minutes left.

He also added a conversion to claim 17 of Woodham’s 27 points to secure a victory which delighted hooker Andrew Fry.

“It was a good, hard fought game against Holt, who never gave up on a boggy muddy pitch,” said Fry.

“Holt showed great heart but we showed more determination and the strength and depth within our squad. All season our finishing has been clinical and that continued here even with people out of position.”
