CANVEY Island stayed second in the Essex One Premier League after an 82-15 win at Billericay.

Canvey are still three points clear of third placed Clacton.

And coach Jay Breading was pleased by his side’s disciplined display.

“It was good to see we managed to keep our shape for most of the game,” said Breading.

“It’s hard not to go off plan when winning with these types of scores.

“But we have a hard game this week against Millwall and need to keep our pattern to stay on the promotion trail.”

Canvey bagged 14 tries and six conversions during a dominant performance in blustery conditions.

The Islanders’ forwards were able to dictate play with three tries coming against the head in both scrummage and line-out play.

They also provided Canvey’s lively backs with plenty of the ball to keep bottom of the table Billericay on the back foot for most of the match.

Number eight Harry Atkins led the way with a trio of tries while prop Jason Fardell, winger Dan Gillett, centre Jason Lansley and winger Jason Carter all touched down twice.

Charlie Downs and Jack Chandler also bagged tries while Charlie Clarke and Jon Edwards were successful with conversions.

Also in Essex One Premier, Stanford le Hope were beaten 45-33 by Maldon and are now sixth in the table.
