PERRY Sansom has been named head coach at Canvey Island Rugby Club.

Canvey will be lining up in London Three Essex next season after winning promotion from London One North last time around.

And Sansom is delighted to be linking up with the Islanders.

“I’m really excited to be coming to Canvey and it’s great to be back involved with club rugby again,” said Sansom, who lined up for Southend in his own playing career.

“It’s been four years since I was with Southend and had to stop playing after spinal and hip injuries but rugby has always played a huge part in my life.

“I met everyone for the first time this week, we had 34 players there along with the committee members and I handed out everyone’s programmes for pre-season.

“Training will get underway at the start of July and I’m really looking forward to getting involved.”

But Sansom is also aiming high in his new role.

And he is keen for Canvey to push for a second successive promotion.

“I know it’s a big aim but everyone is ambitious here and we want to be right up there this season going for another promotion,” said the 28-year-old.

“That’s what was spoken about when we were together the other night and I think it’s important to aim high.”

However, Sansom was also keen to point out he would not be facing the challenge alone.

“I have a clear structure and pattern when it comes to how I want us to play but I’m lucky enough to be connected to people who play higher and I’ll be bringing them in to work with the group in training whenever possible,” said Sansom.

“This is a big job and it brings a lot of responsibility but I jumped at the chance to get involved after being approached.

“I enjoyed meeting everyone and they’re all playing for the love of the game.

“They don’t get paid unlike at other clubs and I can’t wait for it all to get started.”

Canvey’s league campaign will get underway in September.

And captain Charlie Clarke is also looking forward to the year ahead.

“I’m really excited for the up and coming season and working alongside Perry,” said Clarke.

“It’s a step forward for the club, and I am confident that with him we can achieve our goals.”
