JACK Jones insists Westcliff cannot wait to test themselves against table-topping Barnes this weekend.

Westcliff have started the London & SE Premier Division strongly and currently sit fifth in the table.

But Jones is now keen for Westcliff to show their strength in an intriguing tussle at the Gables.

“As a team and as individuals we always strive to be the best and what better way to test yourselves than against the league leaders,” said Jones.

“Having said that, we focus on our game and improving every week regardless of who the opponent is.

“But we are certainly looking forward to Saturday.”

Westcliff go into the game with four wins from their first six games of the campaign.

As a result, they sit just five points below the leaders.

And Jones is expecting an aggressive clash.

“It should be a very physical encounter,” said Jones.

“Barnes are a big side and to match them physically will be our biggest test.

“They also have a good kicking game, so our organisation will be a key element.

“But overall it has been a very good start to the season for us and we want to keep that going.

“We have played some excellent rugby at times and are constantly getting better.

“We have taken the losses in our stride and continue to use the hurt, annoyance and disappointment to improve.

“There is still a long way to go but as long as we keep doing what we have been, with a few tweaks, it will be a meritorious season.”

And Jones also believes Westcliff will have been boosted by last weekend’s break in the season which saw them without a game.

“It definitely would have done the world of good,” said Jones.

“There are always a few niggles after a game so it has been a welcome break.

“It is evident that the boys are itching to get back playing though and we are all looking forward to getting out there on Saturday afternoon.”

>SOUTHEND Saxons will be looking for their first win of the season when they host third-placed Tring in the London & SE Premier Division on Saturday.

Southend are now the only side in the league without a point to their name and they will be keen to end a run of six successive defeats.

In London One North, South Woodham Ferrers host North Walsham while, in London One South, Thurrock head to Chichester.
