WESTCLIFF made it back to back wins with a resounding 54-24 victory against Sutton & Epsom on Saturday.

The victory kept Westcliff fifth in the London & SE Premier Division standings.

And their director of rugby Rick Compton was full of praise for the performance.

“It was a pretty satisfying afternoon,” said Compton.

“Sure there were things we should have done differently and aspects on which we will need to work but we secured maximum match points, which is always the aim.

“We scored eight very good tries which were shared out equally between forwards and backs and we perhaps should have had more.

“It was really pleasing that when our depth was tested as deeply as it was on Saturday that the lads that came in were able to perform as they did.

“That’s very reassuring and a testament to the strong performances that the second team have been producing all season.

“Objectively, we can’t be happy with the tries we conceded - especially the two at the death - but Sutton contributed hugely to an entertaining game and perhaps deserved something from it.”

Westcliff went in front at the Gables with a try from Jim Smith which Jack Jones converted to make it 7-0.

Moments later, Jones scored a try of his own, dashing through from deep to touch down before also adding the extras.

With Westcliff remaining on top, Smith scored his second try of the game as he inserted himself into the line to glide his way forward and Jones’ conversion put the home side 21-0 ahead.

Sutton hit back with an unconverted try before the break but Westcliff replied at the start of the second half with a try from Ewan Binneman, who drove over for a converted try from close range.

Sutton scored the game’s next try before Westcliff responded with a purple patch of rugby that produced four further tries which were all converted.

Jake Spivey, Rupert Edwards, Jones and Ross Merrick all touched down to put the hosts 54-12 in front.

However, Sutton refused to give up and scored two tries late on to secure themselves a try scoring bonus point.
