WESTCLIFF secured a third win in succession by beating Westcombe Park 43-0.

The triumph kept Westcliff fifth in the London & SE Premier Division standings and pleased their director of rugby Rick Compton.

“It was another good all round team performance with tries scored and threat created from all areas of the pitch and team,” said Compton.

“Once again we were mean in defence and we are very happy with where we are at.

“Everyone is playing their part and, at the moment, that is being rewarded with excellent results and confidence.

“There are difficult games to come and injuries and availability will provide challenges and create opportunities for others to come in and play their part.”

Westcliff opened the scoring at the Gables on Saturday when a grubber kick down a narrow channel appeared to have been covered by a Westcombe Park defender.

But he disastrously attempted to scoop the ball from the floor to a team-mate and put it instead straight into the grateful arms of Josh Stol, who had the easiest of tasks to touch down.

Moments later, a break from Sam Brown led to Oliver Jones bagging Westcliff’s second try of the afternoon to make it 10-0 before Jim Smith also charged through to score.

Jack Jones’ conversion made it 17-0 and Westcliff continued to pile on the pressure, which resulted in two more tries before half-time.

The first was scored by Oliver Jones and was a length of the field effort as Westcliff continued to play with ambition and width.

And their lead increased even further when Brown took possession of the ball on his own 10 metre line before outstripping the entire covering defence to make it 29-0 at the break.

After the interval, Westcliff’s cause was not helped by three yellow cards but they remained determined in defence to keep Westcombe Park at bay.

Despite their difficulties, Westcliff were still able to score two more tries, with captain for the day Rob Smith touching down before his ‘little’ brother Jim did likewise after a break from scrum-half Jake Spivey.

Westcliff will now be looking to make it four wins in a row when they head to Guildford on Saturday.
