SOUTHEND Saxons host table-topping Guernsey this afternoon looking to produce an improved performance.

Southend were thrashed 97-7 at Barnes last weekend.

And Saxons’ head coach Josh Ward is eager to see a more determined display tomorrow.

“Saturday is going to be another huge challenge for us against the most consistent team in the league,” said Ward.

“But I don’t think the game can come soon enough.

“We need and want to get back out there and put in a performance we and the club can be proud of.”

Southend’s defeat on Saturday saw them slip back down to second from bottom in the London & SE Premier Division, 10 points from safety.

And it will be another tough test for Saxons as they host a Guernsey side who are six points clear at the top of the table having triumphed 15 times in 17 games.

Southend will be without George Wood this weekend but Paddy Briggs returns in the front row.

In London Three Essex, leaders Basildon head to seventh placed Upminster.

And skipper Jim Harman is expecting a tough test.

“Upminster is never an easy place to go and play,” said Harman.

“They make it difficult, they play the slope and conditions well and are always competitive, with some experienced forwards. They’ve had positive results against East London and Canvey in the last three games and we’re up there to be shot at.”

Fifth placed Canvey Island host Braintree this weekend.
