WESTCLIFF made it four wins in five games with a comprehensive 29-0 win against Shelford.

The victory kept Westcliff fifth in the London & SE Premier Division standings.

And their director of rugby Ricky Compton was happy to his side bounce back from a surprise defeat to Guildford.

“It was great to get back to winning ways and put last week’s disappointment behind us,” said Compton.

“The way we started the game was very pleasing and really we never looked back from that.

“The guys that came back in showed their quality and those deputising in the place of others performed to hopes and expectations.

“It was a strong all round performance and comprehensive win and although we generally reflect on the group rather than individuals it’s fair to say the fat eight had a stormer.”

Westcliff will now be looking to build on the win but they face a tough run of fixtures as they take on the four teams above them in quick succession.

“We have got a block of very difficult games coming up now as we take on each of the top four in turn but it’s worth reflecting on the season so far as we prepare to do so,” said Compton.

“Last season was our best ever at this - the highest level we have ever competed at. Presently, with a third of the season left to play, we have already exceeded last season’s points scored, total bonus points and total match points obtained.

“Whatever the rest of the season brings we have already achieved those goals but others remain.”

Westcliff went ahead with a try from Olly Jones at the weekend before Buster Reynolds was also able to touch down. Tries from Ross Merrick and and Sam Brown soon extended the lead and Westcliff found themselves 24-0 in front at half-time.

However, Shelford started the second half with determination and attempted to drive their way into Westcliff territory - only to be met with stifling and effective defence. After surviving the spell of pressure, Westcliff responded well and went further ahead when Merrick won a foot race to score his second try of the afternoon and complete another win for the hosts.
