WESTCLIFF begin a testing run of fixtures at second placed Barnes tomorrow.

Westcliff have triumphed four times in their last five games to move up to fifth in the London & SE Premier Division standings.

But director of rugby Rick Compton is now bracing his side for a tough period as they face the league’s top four teams in succession.

“We have got a block of very difficult games coming up now as we take on each of the top four in turn but it’s worth reflecting on the season so far as we prepare to do so,” said Compton.

“Last season was our best ever at this - the highest level we have ever competed at.

“Presently, with a third of the season left to play, we have already exceeded last season’s points scored, total bonus points and total match points obtained.

“Whatever the rest of the season brings we have already achieved those goals but others remain and we want to try and take one or two scalps between now and the end of the season as well.”

Barnes - who are 14 points clear of Westcliff - have triumphed in 14 of their 18 matches so far this season and have won their last six games.

The run of fine results included a convincing 97-7 win against Southend Saxons and Westcliff know they must be in top form to pick up more points this weekend.

As they attempt to do, Joe Vandermolen will return to the starting line-up in place of the unavailable Jim Smith.

However, the rest of the side is likely to stay the same as last week as Jake Spivey, Ewan Binneman and Josh Stol - who missed the 29-0 win against Shelford - are all still injured.
