SEEVIC’S rugby academy are enjoying another season to remember.

The youngsters have already won the Premier League title for the third year in succession.

And their director of rugby Danny Cleare has been delighted by their displays.

“It’s been another excellent season building on last year’s successes,” said Cleare.

“We’ve won the Premier League again for the third year running, which qualifies us for the national play-offs which is for the last eight in the country and is a huge achievement.

“We have also won our regional sevens again, which means we have qualified for the national championships at Nottingham University where we will be defending our national title from last year.

“And on top of that we are also into the Essex Cup semi-final where, again, we are trying to defend our title from last year so we’ve done well and I’m very happy with how it’s gone.”

Seevic’s academy has also produced first team players for local clubs in recent seasons, with youngsters now impressing for Westcliff, Southend Saxons and Rochford Hundred.

And Cleare believes the current crop of Seevic players have benefited from a tough fixture list this season.

“This year we have really tried to strengthen our fixture list by playing against AASE Academies,” said Cleare.

“In recent weeks we have played Oaklands, St Paul’s and Brooksby Melton where we won, drew and lost, so competing with these strong colleges has been a highlight for us.

“Plus we also have a tour to Canada that we can look forward to to finish the season.”

Talented centre Matt Needham has skippered the under-18 side this season.

And Needham has also been pleased with the progress being made.

“It was obviously going to be difficult to continue from where we left off last year but I think over the course of the season as a team we’ve started to really bond and put some good performances together,” said Needham.

“That can be seen by our under-18 team getting big wins in the Essex Cup as well as our under-19 team winning the league in consecutive years.

“There are improvements to be made but that’s what we work on in training and hope to improve.”

And Needham - who plays his club rugby for Rochford - is still keen to secure more success.

“It’s great to win the league back-to-back and we really want to use that momentum to push forward in our other competitions, such as sevens and the Essex Cup,” said Needham.

“Getting into the national sevens again was another highlight for me as we look to go for gold again for the second year in a row.

“Another huge goal is to reach the Essex Cup final and win.”
