JAKE Spivey bagged a quickfire hat-trick to help Westcliff trounce Towcestrians 68-10 at the Gables.

Westcliff had been beaten in their last three outings against a trio of top teams in the London & SE Premier Division.

But three Spivey tries in the space of 15 first half minutes saw Westcliff end their losing sequence, much to the delight of their director of rugby Rick Compton.

“It was great to get back to winning ways,” said Compton.

“The lads played well and maintained their discipline and levels throughout.

“Towcestrians are a hardworking side who play for each other and are capable of causing problems if allowed.

“But we never gave them that opportunity and scored some good tries from all areas.”

The victory kept Westcliff fifth in the standings and also saw them secure two more targets.

“We are close to achieving our remaining outstanding goals but also passed a couple of marks worthy of note on Saturday,” said Compton.

“The first try of the second half was our 100th of the season which is a great achievement for us at this level.

“Also, with five games to go, we are mathematically certain to be playing level five rugby again next season and once again finish the season as the highest ranked club in the county.

“Our second team are also the best team in the county having won the Merit Table Division One title.”

Westcliff opened the scoring with a try from Jim Smith at the weekend, which Spivey converted before the bottom of the table visitors replied with a penalty.

However, Spivey then took centre stage with three tries in quick succession - all of which he was able to convert to take his points tally to 23 before heading off injured.

Rob Smith then also touched down to put Westcliff 35-3 ahead at the break before Buster Reynolds did likewise at the start of the second half with a try he also converted.

Smith then bagged his second try of the game before the visitors bagged a breakaway try of their own.

However, Westcliff were soon back on top with tries from Sam Brown, Joe Vandermolen and Finlay Macintyre securing their victory.
