FLY-HALF Jack Jones insists Westcliff still have plenty to play for this season.

Westcliff head to Sutton & Epsom in the London & SE Premier Division this weekend sitting fifth in the table with just four games to go.

But Jones believes Westcliff - who finished seventh last season - are still fired up to succeed.

“The goal from the outset has been to do better than last season and we will push to the last minute of the last game to make sure that happens,” said Jones.

“There is lots still to play for, of course.

“It’s so close in the middle of the league table that if a couple of results don’t go your way then you’re fighting to stay in the top half of the league.

“But we want to finish the season as high up as we can.”

Westcliff are currently 20 points behind fourth placed Hertford but are just two points clear of Tunbridge Wells who sit immediately below them in the standings.

Westcliff - who were beaten 26-12 at Tring last Saturday - host Tunbridge next weekend and will be keen to go into the game on the back of a good win against Sutton.

“We are all hugely looking forward to the game this weekend,” said Jones.

“The whole team is eager to get out and right the wrongs from last weekend and continue our fine season.”

Sutton head into the game sitting eighth in the table after seeing off Southend Saxons 31-22 last time out.

And Jones is bracing himself for another tricky test.

“They will come out firing,” said Jones, “They are coming off of two straight wins and if they win they know, should other games go their way, they will move up in the league. So this is a difficult game.”

But Westcliff will be boosted by the return of some key players tomorrow.

And Jones is hoping that will prove key.

“It’s a huge bonus to have some players back this week,” said Jones.

“It’s so evident that in this league, maintaining a full strength squad as much as possible is a real key to success.

“It will also boost the morale of the rest of the team and ensure players push to improve and play well to retain their places.”
