BASILDON will be aiming to clinch the London Three Essex title with a win at Clacton tomorrow.

Basildon head into the clash on the back of 14 successive victories. But first team manager Mark Farrell has told his team to expect another tough test this weekend.

“We will take nothing for granted and will be focusing our team and efforts on beating Clacton in what is game number 16 in this year’s league campaign,” said Farrell.

“When we first set out with the new coaching team in July 2017, by this stage of the season we wanted to be fighting for a promotion spot and would have settled for a top three position.

“This team has showed unbelievable determination and worked hard with the coaches to up their fitness levels and then trust that game plan - that is what has brought us to this point.”

Basildon head into this weekend’s game nine points clear at the top of the table and need just two more points to ensure they finish the season in first place.

However, Basildon’s top points scorer Sam Ridley knows eighth placed Clacton will be keen to secure an upset.

“We’re expecting a tough and physical game this weekend and I’m sure Clacton will want to put in a good performance at their home ground,” said Ridley.

“I’m sure they understand the importance of this game for us so I have no doubts they will do their best to prevent us from gaining the league title with three games left.”

But Ridley remains determined to triumph to seal the league title.

“If we win the league this weekend then we would have achieved what we set out to do,” said Ridley.

“As much as it would mean to us as a first team it would also be great for the club as a whole.

“A lot of people don’t get the opportunity to win a league title in their career so you have to realise that these kind of moments don’t come around too often.”

And Basildon captain Jim Harman is also desperate to seal the title on Saturday.

“Winning the league will be fantastic for the lads,” said Harman.

“After the struggles in recent years - battling relegations and winless seasons - it’s wonderful to see us moving back in the right direction.

“I was lucky enough to be involved in our last league triumph seven seasons ago but for the majority of the squad this will be their first promotion and title of any kind.

“We’re all really looking forward to stepping back into our clubhouse knowing we’ve wrapped up the title.”
