Southend Rugby Club under nines enjoyed their most successful competition ever last weekend at the Chelmsford Festival.
They comfortably beat Chelmsford Whites in their first match. Tries came from Jake Harman and Josh Beuvink only to lose to Colchester, who went on to win the trophy, in their second match. The Seasiders then won their final pool round against Maldon 4-1 and continued their winning streak in their semi final when beating Chelmsford Blues 4-0 who had won their pool against Westcliff, Upminster and Brentwood along the way.
Southend met Colchester again in the final which concluded with a narrow defeat, seeing them finish the competition in second place out of eight teams.
“The boys showed some outstanding defence and we saw the best performance from the squad this season along with the try of the season where Ethan Harris when he finished off a great team effort from the halfway line,” said a club spokesman.
“The forwards, Billy Perkins, Josh Beuvink, Harvey Brown and Tom Benn-Woolley rucked over the ball aggressively and, most importantly, technically correct which inspired some great team performances.”
The youngsters are now undertaking their first ever tour when they play Chard and Ivel Barbarians in Somerset this Bank holiday weekend.
Players interested in joining this group of children for next season should contact their coach, ex director of rugby at Southend, Kevin Harman on Kevin_harman@sky.com.
