A GOOD all round team performance helped Canvey Island see off Dagenham 25-0.

Canvey put pressure on Dagenham resulting in an early penalty which was put between the posts by full-back Ben Chandler.

Dagenham’s cause was hampered by their scrum half being sinned binned for punching and Canvey immediately stepped up a notch as number eight Dave Dennis took a quick penalty and went over for a try.

Even when they were back to full strength Dagenham were forced to play off the back foot and Canvey went over for a converted try.

The Islanders then had centre Tom Saunders sinned binned just before half time for not releasing a player.

After disallowing a try to Canvey from a driving maul, the home-side drove from a scrum, enabling Dennis to go over for his second.

Moments later, the ball went to the ever dangerous full-back Chandler who cut Dagenham’s defence apart before off-loading to Lay who in turn passed to supporting player prop Jason Fardell to touch down.

Canvey remain second in the London Three North East table and their latest display pleased club spokesman Richard Smith.

“It was a fine team performance,” said Smith. “And we was unlucky not to put a few more points on the board with players being stopped just short of the line a couple of times.”

The Islanders are just ahead of Wisbech who won 17-10 against Basildon. Basildon pressed from the start and despite dominating possession and territory for the whole of the first half they had only a Lee Randall try and conversion and a penalty to show for their superiority.

Wisbech in a rare foray into the Basildon half scored a converted try.

The second half started in the same vein but, 15 minutes in, Basildon suffered three injuries which turned the momentum of the match.

Wisbech had the best of the last 30 minutes and scored a converted try and a penalty to edge out the game.

Billericay were also beaten as they lost 18-5 to league leaders Beccles but South Woodham won 35-20 at Wymondham.
