SOUTHEND Rugby Club are aiming to hit the ground running when their season starts in September.

The Seasiders lost four of their first six games last term.

And, in a bid to avoid a repeat this time around, they have already begun a tough pre-season schedule.

“The lads were given weights programmes to follow during their time away from the club and they’ve come back in great shape,” said Southend’s director of rugby Chris Green.

“We’re now stepping that up even further by bringing in more running drills and work with the ball because it’s important we start well.

“We didn’t do that last season and we can’t afford a repeat if we are to go on and have a better season.”

Southend have been training at Canvey Rugby Club as work is currently being done to their own ground at Warners Bridge.

The Seasiders have also completed the signing of back row Charlie Simpson and Green is delighted to have brought him to the club.

“Charlie is a young player with great potential,” said Green.

“I’m sure he is going to be a very good player so I’m pleased to have signed him.”

Southend’s first pre-season friendly comes away at Hertford on Saturday August 11 before they also face Leicester Lions and Old Albanians before beginning their National Two South campaign.
