Derby day with cup at stake

LONDON Three North East rivals Rochford Hundred and Westcliff go head to head in the Essex Intermediate Cup tomorrow.

Westcliff have already wrapped up the league title, beating their near neighbours twice along the way, and they are keen to make it a league and cup double at Southend's Warners Bridge ground, kick off 2pm.

But Rochford - who are third in the table - have other ideas and are keen to make up for losing in the final to Chelmsford last year.

"It was a poor performance that day and we owe it to ourselves to raise our game on Sunday," said the club's Graham Pratt.

"Westcliff must start as favourites after their exceptional season and they are on a high going into London Two next year.

"Rochford are playing good rugby at present with good wins over Diss, Harlow and Chelmsford in recent weeks and will not be hard pressed to get motivated for this one.

"Perhaps it will be third time lucky for us this weekend."

Westcliff are keen to get their hands on another trophy but know they will be in for another tricky test.

"Being a local derby the form book goes out the window," said the club's press officer Geoff Sawyer.

"They will be all out to stop us and it's going to be a close game but we're confident. We've won both our games against them already this season and want to make it a hat-trick."
