FITZWIMARC’S under-13 girls have been crowned Essex basketball champions for the first time in 23 years.

The team from the Rayleigh senior school faced stiff competition in the lead up to final and finished top in their qualifying group.

That set up a semi-final clash with Hockley’s Greensward Academy, which Fitz won 45-37 to set up a final against Shenfield High School.

Shenfield’s team featured experienced club players and Fitz were hampered early in the match with injuries.

The score was close throughout and was level with five minutes remaining.

Fitz took a four-point lead but Shenfield made it a two-point game and with three seconds remaining Fitz committed a foul.

Shenfield missed their first free throw and Fitz got a rebound and kept possession to close out the game and secure a 41-39 win.

“The PE department are delighted with the result and the girls should be pround of winning the title for the first time in 23 years,” said PE teacher Kate Cowley.
