DEANES School youngsters showed their track and field talents at the Lee Valley Athletics Championships.

The Thundersley-based school were competing against 39 other schools from across Essex, London and Hertfordshire at the competition at the national training centre of Team GB at Picketts Lock.

The Year 7 squad showed great potential for the future with excellent individual results.

Katie Snow, who only recently joined the school after moving from Spain, gained an outstanding first place in the 1,500m.

She showed immense maturity throughout the race, pacing herself to perfection and unleashing a devastating kick over the last 200m to secure the win in a personal best of 6m19 seconds.

Chloe Eayrs, following in her older sisters’ footsteps, performed against the odds in freezing and wet conditions in the javelin to throw a personal best of 19 metres 73cm.

Jodi Flanders (60m hurdles 12.5s, long jump 3m 09cm, relay), Ellie Bean (60m 9.7s, relay), Leanne Priestly (200m 31.5s, relay), Holly Turner (800m 2m50s, high jump 1m20cm, relay), Charlotte Levett (shot putt 5m38) all competed with passion and determination within their events to secure sixth place overall.

The Year 8/9 squad also held their own against tough opposition to finish 13th place overall.

There were again many great individual results.

Lucy Brown (Year 8) contested the 300m for the first time and secured a confident win in 48.4s.

Priscilla Ijoma (Year 8) was second in the 200m and first in the long jump within her pool.

Megan Cross (Year 8) performed exceptionally well against experienced track athletes to run a 15 second personal best in the 1,500m (5m 55s).

Chloe Turner (60m Hurdles 11.7s), Brogan Smith (60m 9.4s, relay), Priscilla Ijoma (200m 29.7s, long jump 3m93cm, relay), Lucy Brown (300m 48.4s), Laura Bishop (800m 3m09s), Megan Cross (1,500m 5m55s), Amelia Hawkes (high jump 1m20, relay), Brooke Smith (shot putt 6m47), Lauren Greenbaum (javelin 8m14), Leah Hinds (relay) showed excellent team work throughout the day.
