SOUTHEND High School for Boys are celebrating after winning the 4 x 100m hurdle final at the renowned Achilles Club relays.
The event was held at the Sir Roger Bannister Track at Oxford University and saw Southend pick up the David Hemery trophy for their success.
Scott Kingman, Serge Ayao, Kayode Odumosu and Sam Bennett sped home to see off their rivals.
And their display delighted the school’s head of PE Stephen Thomas.
“To get the David Hemery trophy donated by a famous Olympian from 1960s is tremendous,” said Thomas.
“We also beat all the public schools which in itself is always pleasing.”
The Achilles Club was formed back in 1920 by and for past and present members of the Oxford and Cambridge Athletic Clubs.
The club rose to the forefront of British athletics and members continue to serve at the highest administrative posts of national sport.
Part of that success is now the Achilles Schools’ Relays which were first held in 1963 when president Philip Noel-Baker came up with the idea for the event .
