SOUTHEND High School for Boys has an international gold medalist in its midst after Sam Bennett helped the England team to victory at the Home Internationals meeting.

Year 10 pupil Bennett qualified to represent his country after finishing second in the English schools 100m hurdles race representing Essex and was selected to represent England last weekend at Bedford.

And Bennett excelled, running the third leg of the 4x100m relay and helping the team to the gold medal and a championship best time of 41.5 seconds, as well as silver in the hurdles, having run 13.24s.

Elsewhere, at the English Schools Championships, Southend High’s Michae Akhieke came second in the country for his age group in the long jump, with 6.38m enough to earn him a silver medal.

Josh Omotosho came eighth in the IB Hammer.
