Great reception for school athletic aces

THE two Southend Highs can expect a fantastic reception today when they arrive back home after outstanding performances in the World Schools Athletic Championships in Estonia.

The girls from Southchurch Boulevard finished third, the best ever performance by an English school. And their captain, 2008 Echo junior sports personality runner-up Georgia Atkins, won both the 100 metres hurdles and long jump — the latter with a best ever leap of six metres.

Georgia collected the title as the highest individual points scorer of the event.

The boys, based at Prittlewell Chase, were also well to the fore with seventh spot in their third successive appearance at the worlds.

The Girls’ School were particularly appreciative of the sponsorship they received for the trip from a variety of sources.

They got polo tops courtesy of Leigh Bakery and Jez Mancer of personal trainer Just Jez plus trolley bags from DJ Brickwork Ltd.

The two schools were in a line-up of more than 600 athletes from 31 countries in the line-up in the Estonian capital of Tallinn.

The two schools now prepare for this Saturday’s English Schools Track and Field Cup national final at the Copthall Stadium in Barnet.
