Youngsters learn secret of great sport performance is - breakfast!

12:30pm Tuesday 9th March 2010

A HOST of sport-loving youngsters from throughout the town took part in the half-term camp organised by Southend East School Sports Partnership.

One, Sean Graham of Thorpe Greenways, gives a run-down on what went on during the week.

“Each day at the camp we started the day off with a healthy nutritious breakfast that consisted of fruit, cereals, yoghurts, or oat breads (I consumed most!).

“After the first day we learnt that breakfast was a vital part of the day as we were constantly taking part in a variety of activities.

“Years one, two three, and four took part in a skills and games camp for three of the days.

“Each year group took part in a skills session in the morning and took their new founded skills and adapted them to a game situation in the afternoon.

“Sports included rugby, football and tennis.

“Years five, six and senior school children took part in athletic sessions linked in with psychology towards sport, which was very interesting, and now feel I have learnt more with coping with certain situations.

“On the Thursday we were taken to Belfairs Woods for an adventure trail.

“Everyone was put into teams that were given a colour and, around the woods, were ribbons of different colours.

“Each team had to collect these along with envelopes that contained challenges!

“The challenges turned out to be eating different types of foods, which of course everyone loved!

“In the afternoon we took part in master class sessions from county badminton coach Dave Hardman followed by basketball with the Essex Pirates — those guys were three times the size of us and could dunk!

“It was an action packed week full of variety, which everyone loved.

“We tried new and exciting challenges and sports.

“Many thanks to Selina Fox for organising such a great week, and to to all the coaches who provided the fun and exciting sessions.

“Now back to school . . .”
