Tricky ties converted to rugby trophy win

SEEVIC College rugby team gained their first seven-a-side trophy of the season in the Essex and Hertfordshire Under-19 Closed Tournament at Davenant.

With the majority of competing teams being made up of grammar schools, SEEVIC were the only college to be invited.

The Thundersley-based campus experienced some difficult opposition on route to the finals, having to overcome a spirited West Hatch School and a very physical Enfield Grammar team.

But sterling performances from Essex flyer Lee Wiseman and the powerhouse Sam Reynolds ensured SEEVIC came out on top in these encounters.

The final was played against seven-a-side specialists Richard Hale School and it proved to be an excellent gripping encounter.

SEEVIC, which is in Kiln Road, took the lead early through a break by player of the tournament Dan Bracknell, who then off-loaded in the tackle to Wiseman to finish.

The try of the day then came through a combined team effort by SEEVIC crashing through tackles and offloading superbly for vice captain Matt Basham to touch down.

The Richard Hale school came back to put pressure on SEEVIC and a score under the posts left the score 10-7 at half-time.

The second half of the final saw SEEVIC take the initiative, being far too physical for the grammar school boys.

James Roberts and Jo Vandermolen made some ferocious tackles and turning over the ball for Wiseman to race away and complete a memorable day out for the college boys with a 15-7 win.

Winning captain Perry Sansom said: "The boys have worked extremely hard to win this event.

"With the national Rosslyn Park Tournament around the corner, we can identify what worked well for us today and how to play different styles against different teams"
