Layla hasn’t looked back since giving rugby a try

| Layla Pickering - trying for the rugby big time |
FITZWIMARC School's Layla Pickering is following in her brother's footsteps - by making a name for herself in the world of rugby union.
The 14-year-old Rayleigh girl, a student from year nine at the Hockley Road school, has been chosen to play for both Essex and the Eastern Counties.
It was five years ago that she decided that rugby was for her after seeing brother Tom in action.
She decided to give it a try and joined the Rochford Hundred Club, where she has been ever since.
Layla initially played alongside the boys, but moved into an all-girls set-up at the age of 12.
She said: "I train twice a week and play matches on Sundays.
"I enjoy rugby because it is really good fun and I have made lots of new friends."
And her hopes for the future? She said: "I would love to get to the England trials one day and then hopefully get into the national team."
Fitz's Julie Parrot added: "We are all very pleased for Layla. She is an excellent all-round sportswoman and is a very valued member of the school team.
"She is always very hard-working and consistently has a fantastic attitude in everything she does."
