SHAMISO Ndoro proved age was no barrier by winning the Ipswich Open.

Five-year-old Shamiso, who trains at the Southend Leisure and Tennis Centre and the Batchwood Academy in St Albans, beat a succession of eight-year-olds to come out on top.

In the round robin box, Shamiso beat Elizabeth Brown 10-8, Eleanor Garwood 10-3 and Amber Harding 10-5.

In the semi final, Shamiso beat another eight-year-old Keira Bedford 10-2 and then in the final she beat Elizabeth Brown 10-5.

Shamiso, who is from Southend, was watched by former British number one and world number 49 Elena Baltacha and she really impressed by the youngster’s technique, concentration and movement.

Shamiso’s mother Katie Gardner was also in attendance and she was keen to thank her daughter’s school for the part they have played in her success.

“I would like to thank the support that Bournes Green Infants School have given Shamiso during the beginning of her tennis journey,” said Katie.

“I’d also like to thank where she trains for their effort and enthusiasm.”
