NICK Bohringer clinched the first touchtennis title of his career, winning the Southend Futures event at Garon Park.

The Leigh based 33-year-old saw off his Essex storm team-mate Luke Mayes in a closely contested final.

And Bohringer was delighted to come out on top, winning the final set on a tie-break.

“For a 25 Futures event the line up was strong and I would’ve just been happy making the final to be honest,” said Bohringer.

“But to come away with an intense victory over the top seed felt good especially as he’s been in form of his life.”

Bohringer then made the trip to Southampton on Sunday, along with eight of his Essex Storm team-mates, to take part in the David Lloyd 200 event.

However, Bohringer, the world’s number 13, was eliminated in the round of 16 after being given a hard draw in the competition.

“Sometimes things just don’t work on the day and you just have to accept it,” said Bohringer.

“My opponent was too strong and consistent but it was still a great day and a great tournament too.”

Six of the Essex Storm players were eliminated in the first round but Mayes also made it to the second row before being knocked out.

Chris Phillips therefore advanced the furthest as he reached the quarter finals.

His double partners Christine Horne also impressed in the women’s competition, working her way through to the final before losing to Sharon Fitton.
