ESSEX’s senior men’s team warmed up for LTA County Week with a 7-2 friendly victory over Cambridge University.
Westcliff Hardcourts’ Richard Barham and Sam Bayda, plus Thorpe Bay’s Harry Randle formed half of the six-strong Essex team that played at Fenners.
Barham, 37, and Randle took star billing for Essex as they remained unbeaten against the students in the annual friendly fixture.
Originally scheduled to be six singles and six doubles matches, the wet grass courts were ruled unfit for use and the match featured nine doubles on hard courts.
Essex were 2-1 up after the first round of matches and extended that to 4-2 after the second round.
The visitors won all three matches in the final round for a convincing win ahead of the Le-Lyle Annual Doubles Tournament at Thorpe Bay on July 11 and 12, which will be the final preparation match before County Week.
The men will be heading to Havant LTC for the inter-county championships, which start on Monday, July 20.
