MATT Pearce is enjoying a summer to remember, winning a quadruple of titles.

The 25-year-old from Thorpe Bay triumphed in grade three standard events at Billericay, Felixstowe and Thorpe Bay before winning a grade four event at Westcliff Hard.

And Pearce is thrilled to have added to his trophy cabinet.

“I’m really pleased to have won four singles title this summer season,” said the former Cecil Jones School pupil.

“I was number one seed in them all due to my high rating so the pressure was on and I’m delighted I was able to win them all on.”

Pearce, who also reached the quarter-finals at the Cumberland British Tour before losing to the number one seed, has now returned to his coaching job at New Hall School in Chelmsford and is not yet sure when his next tournament will be.

Pearce successfully defended his open men’s singles at the Essex Championship.

The Southend Lawn player defeated Thorpe Bay’s Harry Randle in two very close sets played in a repeat of last year’s final.

Other than that it was up to the younger players from south-east Essex to pick up silverware.

Rochford’s Olivia King, playing her first Grade 3 tournament, won the 10 and under age group, beating higher rated players in the semi-final and final.

And Kyla Eves, from Westcliff Hardcourts, remained unbeaten on her way to victory in the eight and under girls.

Hockley’s Charlie Kauders-Boothby also avoided defeat to win the boys’ eight and under event.

Evie Smart (DL Basildon) won the 12 and under girls singles in convincing form but lost out in 14 and under mixed doubles final. Darien Lamb (Westcliff Hardcourt) won the 18 and under boys’ doubles with James Caddies (Gidea Park).

But Natalie Crawford, from David Lloyd Southend, was two points away from winning the girls’ nine and under singles.

Nyah Kauders (Hockley) and Zuzanna Glowacz (Westcliff Hardcourt) both reached the finals of the 14 and under and 16 and under girls singles but did not come away with the silver ware.

The Essex Championship, which used to be called the Essex Closed, was held at Thorpe Bay tennis club, with rain on six of the seven days.

Ian and Lesley Pitt, alongside Mark Bragoli, refereed the event and thanked the volunteers at Thorpe Bay for their help staging the event.
