SOUTHEND Lawn have held the club’s opening day tournament.

The event, which was sponsored by Diana Sorrell in memory of her husband and ex singles champion Dennis, saw nearly 30 members taking part.

Georgina Bassett scooped the ladies title while Simon Harris squeezed in to win the men’s after a play-off.

And Southend Lawn committee member Graham Wells was delighted with how the day went.

“The tournament was a memorial to one of our longest serving members, Dennis Sorrell,” said Wells.

“The turn-out at the opening day tournament and the enjoyment had by all was a real representation of the love Dennis had for the game.

“We had about 30 members involved in the tournament and we had five courts used so it was a successful day.”

And a club spokesman hopes Southend Lawn will continue to attract new members this summer.

“Despite its name the club is open all year round with artificial grass courts and floodlights enabling play throughout the year and well into the evening,” said the spokesman.

“The club is open to new members and we have our Great British Tennis Weekend on May 13 and 14 between 10am and 1pm.

“Free coaching is available that weekend along with great membership offers for adults and juniors.”
