SOUTHEND Lawn’s men’s first team kicked off their Leigh and Westcliff League season with a 6-0 win at home to Hockley.

Third pair Tim Padbury and Graham Taylor secured Southend’s first two sets while first pair Jon Lee and Alex Lamprell did likewise, winning in straight sets.

Skipper Graham Wells, who was partnered by Kevin Barrs, grabbed two close fought sets to complete what was a good start to their campaign.

And Southend Lawn’s Essex Seniors ladies squad have also been in fine form in the Essex League.

The team is a new venture for the club and they have made a good start to the season, with a win and a draw so far.

Southend will now be looking to build on their success and they are expecting another busy week both on and off the court.

A club spokesman explained: “We have another busy few days coming up with Essex veterans fixtures for both the ladies and men’s teams.

“There’s also a full Leigh and Westcliff programme so there’s plenty going on.

“In addition, we are also hosting our Great British Tennis Weekend.

“Anybody who fancies a game or is thinking about starting tennis is welcome along on either Saturday or Sunday between 10am and 1pm.

“There will be a chance for some free coaching or to just hit a few balls.

“There will also be some great membership offers available so we’re hoping to get as many people along as possible for what promises to be a couple of really fun days.”
