Elms topple Thorpe to go top

KENT Elms took over top spot in Mixed Division One by a point after defeating previous leaders Thorpe Bay 3-2 at home.

Phil Stevens and Steph Haddrell won 6-4 but lost the remaining sets 6-3 7-5 to Thorpe’s Geoff Burdett and Sue Sargent.

But Kevin Harvey and Mandy White hit back for Elms with a 6-1 6-2 victory over Graham Ray and Heather Bell.

Southend Lawn IV put some daylight between themselves and Deanes in Mixed Division Six with a 4-0 win.

Mike Walker and Annabelle McCrimmon beat Dan Wedge and Doris SMith 7-5 6-2 and David SMith and Anne-Marie Driscoll defeated Mike Chambers and Tracey Beckett 6-1 6-4.

Leaders Rayleigh continued their march to the Men’s Division One title with a 4-0 win over closest rivals Thorpe Bay.

Dave Barham and Danny Murphy eat Alan Rayner and Jeff Burditt 6-3 7-6, before Ryan Wilson and Steve Lloyd saw off John Blackman and Mike Nevin 6-2 6-2.

Hadleigh Park II picked up four valuable points from their 3-2 home win over second-placed Thorpe Bay V Park are now fifth after Andy Buswell and Les Ashton beat Rochard Leadley and Bob Binnendijk 7-5 6-2 in the first rubber.

Mark Ludlow and Joe Parker took the first set 6-1 but Roger Burrell ad Declan Ball hit back for Thorpe by taking the other sets 7-5 7-6.

Westcliff Hard’s struggled at the foot of Ladies’ Division One continue after they lost 4-1 away to third-placed Leigh.

Anne Wright qand Lisa Gordon got the ball rolling for Leigh by defeating Linda Vaughan and Sue Blackshaw 7-5 6-3.

Clare Elliott and Linda Gaze took the first set of the second rubber 6-4 but Hard’s Pam Coles and Jeanette Braby forced a third set by taking the secon 6-2. But Elliott and Gaze prevailed 6-3 to win the match.

Thorpe Bay IV closed the gap on Southend Lawn II in Ladies’ Division Four to a quartet of points after a 4-1 home win.

Anne Hemmings and Ven Clemesha had a 6-1 6-2 win over Lawn’s Lorna Lawrie and Anne-Marie Driscoll.

Lucy Simpson and Annabelle McCrimmon took the first set 7-5 in the second rubber but saw Cathy Page and Julie Jones take the other s 6-4 6-3.
