CRAIG Thompson and Sue Blackshaw may have been late for their match against Leigh’s Jeremy Heales and Lisa Gordon, but they made up for lost time.
Heales and Gordon claimed the first set as a walkover due to the late arrival of their Westcliff Hard counterparts for their Leigh & Westcliff LTA Mixed Division One encounter.
But once they were on court, Thompson and Blackshaw took the second set 6-2 and then claimed the third 6-4 to give Hard the advantage.
Simon Sharpe and Wendy Grant claimed the first set of the second rubber 6-1 but then the Leigh pairing of Allan Steel and Claire Elliott hit back with 6-3 and 7-5 wins to level the match.
Mixed Division Two action saw Westcliff Hard II host Westcliff Lawn in a match that finished in a 2-2 draw.
Nick Spillett and Christine Britt gave Lawn the derby advantage with a 6-3 6-2 win over Jeanette Fozard and Andy Baucutt.
But the lack of a second pair meant Hard’s Jo Baucutt and Roger Davies claimed a walkover to ensure a stalemate.
