NALANDI Sharma-Ebdon retained her ladies’ singles crown when Southend & District LTA staged their winter finals.
In a repeat of last year’s final the Westcliff Lawn player defeated Westcliff Hardcourt’s Karen Poole 7-6 6-2.
Matt Pearce also successfully defended his men’s singles trophy at Deanes Indoor Tennis Centre in Daws Heath Road, Thundersley.
The Westcliff Hardcourts player overcame Garon’s Craig George in straight sets with a 6-2 6-2 win.
Pearce added to his trophy haul by partnering clubmate Gemma Chittocks to victory in the mixed doubles, where they beat Roger Peters (Westcliff Lawn) and Karen Poole (Westcliff Hard) 6-2 6-3.
Poole contested four finals and tasted success in one of them, the ladies’ doubles where she teamed up with Thorpe Bay’s Jasmin Young to neat the Westcliff Hard pairing of Claire Hammerman and Viranee Viravong 7-5 6-3.
Craig George could take some consolation for his men’s singles defeat by the fact that he now was the summer and winter men’s doubles silverware in his collection.
George teamed up with Wickford’s Jack Woolcott, with whom he won the summer crown, to beat the Westcliff Lawn pairing of Steve Wynn and Roger Peters 6-4 7-5.
The longest final on the day was the ladies veteran doubles, which lasted three hours and 20 minutes.
Thorpe Bay’s Sue Sergeant and Ann Murray eventually emerged from the marathon match as winners, having defeated Westcliff Lawn’s Gill Sanderson and Marg Rimmer 6-4 3-6 7-6.
