SOUTH Essex players came up trumps at the Winter Individuals tournament run at Redbridge.
Westcliff Hardcourt’s Virunee Viravong defeated Adele Sammons from Upminster club Cranston Park to win the ladies’ singles open 5-7 6-1 6-3.
Virunee’s club-mate Richard Barham teamed up with Dave Barham from Rayleigh to secure a 6-4 7-6 men’s doubles open win over Craig George (Garons) and Jack Woolcott (Wickford).
And there was victory too for Westcliff Hard’s Trevor Stone who teamed up with Frinton’s Colin Minter to defeat the Westcliff Lawn pairing of Graham Goodale and Iain McDonald 6-3 7-6.
Four other finals featured players from south Essex clubs, but they all ended up on the losing side.
Sue Hookway and Faye Watts of Westcliff Hard who lost 5-7 2-6 to Claire Dixey and Adele Sammons of Cranston Park in the ladies’ doubles open.
Westcliff Hard’s Sue Hookway and Karen Poole went down 0-6 4-6 to Chris Jolly and Louise Baker of Cranston Park in the ladies’ doubles over-40.
Craig George (Wickford) and Gemma Chittocks (Garons) lost 1-6 3-6 to Lee Duncan and Claire Dixey of Cranston Park.
And the Westcliff Hard pairing of Fiona and Trevor Stone were beaten 4-6 3-6 by Jenny King and Malcolm Hobbs of The Essex, Earls Colne.
Paul Lansley of David Lloyd Basildon lost 2-6 6-4 2-6 to Neil Taylor of Gidea Park in the men’s singles over-45.
He also lost with his partner Denise Downey of Gidea Park 6-7,6-7 to Stuart Cumming and Solange Roast of Clearview in the mixed over-35 doubles.
The event was organised by Mave and John Blewett and was held at the Essex County LTA’s headquarters at Redbridge. Essex County LTA president John Tucker presented the prizes.
