Youngster Needham shines in Grove test

THORPE BAY’S Harry Needham was the star of the show at the Grove Junior Tournament, in Chelmsford.

The youngster won the 12 and under singles event, but lost in a close match in the semi-final of the 14 and under singles event.

Gianluca Broadley, who plays for Westcliff Hardcourts, lost a close match in the final of the under-14 boys final to the host club’s Ben Good.

Broadley’s tournament was a big success, however, as he defeated the number two seed on his way to the final.

Max Chesher, who like Broadley, plays for Westcliff Hardcourts, lost in the final of the under-16 boys trophy to Braintree’s Olly Geddes-Smith.

Billericay’s Jack Leggatt won the under-18 doubles title for the third season in a row.

He teamed up with William Fauxx (Danbury) to beat Billericay’s Daniel Cotton and Braintree’s George Shorten.

Emily Carrington (DL Basildon), playing in heavy rain, just beat Tanisha Schumacher in the under 12 girls singles.
