SOUTH Essex players will be looking for Essex glory when their county winter individual finals are held this weekend.

The south of the county has a good representation at finals day, which is taking place at the County LTA headquarters at Redbridge.

Westcliff Lawn’s Matt Pearce will team up with Tom Perry from Colchester’s Spring Lane club to take on Mark Klein and Rich Klein in the men’s doubles.

Pearce and Perry defeated Westcliff Hard duo David and Richard Barham 7-6 6-2 in their semi-final, while the Kleins received a walkover.

Westcliff Hard will be represented in the women’s doubles when Sue Hookway and Faye Watts face Faye Dixey and Olivia Sofroniou.

Hookway and Watts booked their place with a 6-0 6-0 semi-final victory over Thorpe Bay’s Kris Newbery and Sue Sergeant.

Sergeant will partner Paul Lansley of David Lloyd Basildon in the mixed 45 doubles against Wayne Lemoine and Denise Downey.

And the new town club will have Robert Heaton and Christie Hale, who also plays at Westcliff Lawn, in action in the mixed doubles, where they will face Lee Duncan and Faye Dixey.

Westcliff Hard’s Sue Blackshaw and Sue Hookway had a walkover in their women’s 50 doubles semi-final match and will face Christine Jolly and Pat Wire in the final on Sunday.

And Hard will have veterans John Harris and Trevor Stone contesting the men’s 55 doubles.

The pair defeated Brian Laurence and Tony McManus 6-2 6-1 to earn the right to play Ron Barham and Rick Klein, who beat the Thorpe Bay pairing of Graham Ray and Alan Rayner 6-2 4-6 6-4 in the semis.

Westcliff Lawn’s Gill Sanderson and Rayleigh’s Gary Coombes are in the semi-finals against Paul Lansley (David Lloyd Basildon) and Denise Downey, with the winners meeting Stuart Cumming and Solange Roast in the final.

The finals start at 10am at Essex LTA headquarters in Forest Road, Barkingside. Spectators are welcome.
