David Lloyd trio hit all the right shots

THE first junior spring tournament to be held at David Lloyd Basildon has been hailed as a success by organisers.

Close to 100 children representing 25 clubs entered the four-day event which was held during the school half-term holidays.

And there was success for three players from the host club, which is on Basildon's Festival Leisure Park, with Robert Heaton, Christie Brackett and Maryam Williams winning their events.

"The event was well supported with 92 children entering and the overall standard of play was very high," said Lesley Pitt, who refereed the tournament with husband Ian.

"They were only allowed to enter one event and there were no doubles, but it is hoped to entend this next year."

The event was sponsored by Gillian Cooney, who presented the trophies on finals day and Dave Smith, of DA Sports who presented the players with vouchers.

RESULTS Girls' 10 and under: Maryam Williams (DL Basildon) beat Jasmine Walker (Cranston Park) 4-2, 5-3. Boys' 10 and under: James Caddies (Clearview) beat Andrew Berry (Westcliff Hard) 4-1, 4-2. Girls' 12 and under: Angela Borowski (Clearivew) beat Zainab Williams (DL Basildon) 7-6 (1), 6-3. Boys' 12 and under: Joel Cannell (DL Chigwell) beat Ben Miller (Harlow) 7-6 (5), 6-3. Girls' 14 and under: Emily Defroand (Cranston Park) beat Georgia Wheatley (Thorpe Bay) 6-2, 6-0. Boys' 14 and under: Robert Heaton (DL Basildon) beat Matthew Porter (Harlow) 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (3). Boys' 18 and under: Adam Paterson (Hockley) won the round robin with Shane Scanlon (Rochford) runner up.

Consolation Events - Boys' 10 and under: Harjas Sagoo (Gidea Park) beat Luke Read (DL Basildon) 3-5, 4-1, 4-0. Boys' 12 and under: Tom Pudney (Garons) beat Peter Odegbami (Westcliff Lawn) 6-4, 6-3. Girls' 14 and under: Mary Pressman (Billericay) beat Daisy Ronn 6-0, 6-3. Boys' 14 and under: Joe Peters (Garons) beat Joe Wright (Elm Park) 7-6 (7), 7-6 (3).

l WESTCLIFF Hardcourts lost to David Lloyd Basildon in the Jubilee Cup.

The cup was introduced in 1977 by Southend & District LTA to mark Queen Elizabeth II's silver jubilee.

But the Hard ladies' team of Fiona Stone, Karen Poole, Sue Hookway and Alex Varran held the rivals from the Basildon club to a 2-2 draw in the Essex Winter Leagues match.

l IN Winter League play, Thorpe Bay stay one point above Rochford in Men's Division One after Alan Rayner and Michael Balls brought them back from 2-0 down.

Meanwhile, Wickford were cast further adrift at the bottom after Ian Hookway, Ray Temple, Dave Blunt and Andy Cox completed a clean sweep for Westcliff Hard.

In Ladies' Division Two, Thorpe Bay II joined leaders Hockley on 28 points after Sharon Carlile, Heather Clark, Roz Knight, Rebecca Clayton led them to a 4-0 win over Kent Elms II.
