Wells digs deep for twin victories

GRAHAM Wells had two reasons to be cheerful after a brace of wins at the Southend Lawn Winter Handicap finals.

Wells teamed up with Laurel Padbury to claim the mixed doubles crown by beating Nick Stuart and Viv Scanlon.

Padbury and Wells took the first set 7-5 before losing the second 2-6. But they won the third 6-3 to take the victory.

The men's doubles saw Wells again win in three sets, this time partnering Roger Perham.

Wells and Perham took the first set 7-6 before being pegged back as Gerald Sverdloff and Paul Stannard claimed the second 6-3.

However, Wells and Perham won the third set 6-3 to get their hands on the silverware.

The ladies' doubles final saw Dawn Stennett and Kitty Livingston beat Jo Day and Sally Marsham 6-2 6-4.

Alex Lamprell beat Steve Clarke 6-2 5-7 6-2 to win the men's singles.

Jo Day defeated ladies' doubles partner Sally Marsham in the ladies' sginles.

Marsham took the first set 6-4 but Day bounced back to take the next two 6-4 6-2.

Viv Scanlon and Caroline Willis took the ladies' veteran doubles honours by beating Kitty Livingston and Pam Metcalf 6-3 6-3.

Graham Taylor was crowned men's veteran singles champion after beating Alan Worsdale 6-4 6-3.

The finals were played at Southend Lawn at the weekend with handicaps being set by club captain Mike Walker to make the tournament a level playing field.

l THE deadline for entering Leigh & Westcliff LTA junior summer league, sponsored by Steggles & Co is approaching.

All junior secretaries have been contacted and are asked to contact Alan Young by March 29.

The introduction of a league consisting of U14 and U12 pairings, in addition to the current U16 and U14 system is creating interest and it is hoped will open more opportunities for younger players.

>A Thunderball Doubles tournament sponsored by Carter Glass is to be run for juniors aged under-16 on the last three days of the Easter holidays, April 9, 10 and 11.

Interested juniors should contact Deanes Sports College in Daws Heath Road, Thundersley, where the event will be held. Call 01268 741162.
