Hard’s Chesher triumphs at the double

SIMON Chesher scored a brace of wins at the Southend & District Lawn Tennis Association winter finals.

The Westcliff Hardcourts player won the men's singles, for the first time since 2002, and men's doubles crown at Deanes Indoor Tennis Centre in Daws Heath Road, Thundersley.

Chesher's success came on a day when the Hardcourts claimed six final triumphs, three more than nearest rivals David Lloyd Basildon, who picked up three.

Chesher won the singles crown that he last claimed in 2002 by beating Garon's Craig George 7-5 6-4.

And he followed it up with victory in the men's doubles, where he partnered club-mate Lance Owen to a 6-2 6-2 win over Wickford's Craig George and Sea Cleary.

Jasmin Young won here first Southend & District title by defeating fellow Thorpe Bay player and defending champion Ashlee Tyrrell 6-3 6-3 in the ladies' singles final.

The ladies' doubles saw success for David Lloyd Basildon pairing Francis Payne and Mel Hall, who beat Sue Hookway and Faye Watts of Westcliff Hard 7-5 6-1.

Victory on Sunday meant Payne and Hall are now the reigning summer and winter ladies' doubles champions.

Jamie Willson claimed his fourth mixed doubles crown, pairing up with Alice Dickens to beat Lance Owen and Karen Poole 3-6 6-0 in an all-Westcliff Hardcourts final.

Willson last won the mixed doubles 14 years ago and each of his quartet of successes have come with a different partner.

The longest match of the day was the all-Westcliff Hard veteran men's doubles where Graham Goodale and Terry Taylor beat Jamie Willson and Ian Currie 7-5 4-6 7-5 in a showdown that lasted more than two and a half hours.
