Rochford gamble pays big dividends
ROCHFORD'S men's tennis team triumphed 4-0 against Harlow to seal their first Essex League title without suffering a single defeat.
The team of captain Geoff Payne, Rob Scott, Shane Scanlon, Toby Hills, Tim Collett, Dan McLean and club coach Chris Nelson left Leigh & Westcliff LTA League Division One to start from the bottom in the Essex League in search of greater challenge more than a year ago.
And Payne has been pleased with the progress made.
"I'm delighted with the result," he said. "For such a small club it was a huge gamble to move to a new league but the players and club felt they needed a new challenge, its up to us now to see how far we can climb".
Previously the club only entered into the Leigh and Westcliff leagues, but over the past year Rochford players has become more competition hungry.
The club are now fielding teams in Essex, Chelmsford, Southend and Leigh & Westcliff in both junior, veterans and senior level in singles and doubles.
Anyone interested in playing regular matches should contact Geoff Payne on 07782 157060.
