Thunderball joy for top pairing
JAMES Smith and Matt Tumbridge were celebrating after winning the three-day The Deanes Thunderball Tournament.
The duo defeated Adam Grimmett and Ryan Bright 7-6 6-3 in an exciting final at the indoor tennis centre at the senior school in Daws Heath Road, Thundersley.
Nine pairs battled it out in full matches that wre played over the first two days of the competition, which was sponsored by Carter Glass.
The top four players progressed to semi-finals and the final on the third day.
Oliver Smith and Charlie Kay, who had previously beaten Grimmett and Bright in the earlier rounds, lost 2-6 2-6 to the pair in their semi-final.
And Smith and Tumbridge beat Joel Falken-Smith & Aron Van Der Mollen 10-2 in tie break after the match stood at 3-6 6-4 after two sets.
The remaining 10 players not in the semi-finals played in an American tournament.
Max Tsujino and Myles Shaw tied for first place and Lloyd Shaw was in third place.
The next Carter Glass Junior 'Thunderball' Tournament will be an LTA rated singles event for under 16.
It will be held at Deanes during the week commencing Monday, August 11.
