GRAHAM Coughlan looks set to stay at Southend United.

The experienced Irishman made 35 appearances at the heart of the defence last season and also acted as assistant manager following Tommy Widdrington’s departure in December.

His contract is now close to expiring but talks are well underway to keep him at the club.

“Both Paul Sturrock and the board are keen to retain Graham in both a first team coach and player role,” confirmed a source close to the club.

“It is believed a deal is being negotiated at the moment.”

Coughlan came to Southend on a free transfer last summer having previously worked with Sturrock at both Plymouth Argyle and Sheffield Wednesday.

He took charge of Blues’ reserve side and was expected to concentrate more on coaching.

However, injuries to Bilel Mohsni and Mark Phillips provided the 36-year-old with a chance to play in the first team and he produced a number of consistent performances.

Coughlan will follow goalkeeper Glenn Morris, defender Sean Clohessy, midfielder Lee Sawyer and winger Ryan Hall in committing his future to Southend.
