The Blues
Gower gambling on reaching play-offs
Mark Gower
Mark Gower

BLUES winger Mark Gower has more reason than most to help his side reach the League One play-offs this season.

For not only is the winger desperate to secure a return to the Championship - he is also chasing the money of his team-mates.

"We've got a bit of a bet going about who is going to be the top goalscorer," said Gower.

"It's a bit of friendly competition between the lads but I'm struggling to catch Nicky Bailey so I need all the games I can get.

"He's three ahead of me and I could definitely do with us reaching the play-offs to try and overtake him.

"But all jokes aside we don't mind who scores as long as we're winning because we're all obviously desperate to get back into the Championship after having a taste of it last season."

The Shrimpers are currently well set to finish in the play-offs and have now lost just one of their last 12 outings.

Gower wants the impressive run to continue tomorrow afternoon when Walsall visit Roots Hall.

And he is again confident of coming out on top.

"We're playing as a unit again and that's what's made the difference," said the 29-year-old.

"Everyone is on form and full of confidence and that what we want. Walsall are a decent team and I'm sure it will be a good passing game because I saw their match with Leeds on television last week and they seemed to be a side who look to get the ball down and play just like ourselves.

"But we're feeling good and really believe we're going to win every game we play, including tomorrow."

Those views have been boosted by returning to Roots Hall where Gower insists Blues are more threatening.

"It's nice to be back home because it's a good pitch and it suits the way we play," he said.

"Swindon was difficult and meant we had to grind it out a bit but we know we can win that way too.

"We want to keep it going now and wrap up our place in the play-offs as soon as we can.

"We originally thought 70 points would be enough but it's looking as if we might need a few more now - you just can't tell."

Blues have no new injury concerns ahead of the game but will again be missing full back Che Wilson (Achilles) and striker Alex Revell (hernia).
