SHRIMPERS striker Lee Barnard is fighting to be fit for Friday's vital play-off clash at Doncaster Rovers.

The Billericay-based forward, who has scored nine goals for Blues since signing in January, picked up an ankle problem during the first leg against the Yorkshire side on Friday night, which ended 0-0.

But he is hopeful of being able to figure at the Keepmoat Stadium.

"My ankle is still quite swollen but touch wood it will soon go down and I will be able to return to training before the end of the week and play at Doncaster," said the 23-year-old frontman.

"I injured it after about 25 minutes when I went in for a 50/50 tackle.

"Their player, who I think was Brian Stock, caught me quite badly and I was struggling for the rest of the game.

"I was really feeling it but I obviously didn't want to come off because it was such a big game and I was determined to help us do well."

Barnard has rested and iced his ankle since suffering the blow and is desperate to be involved as Steve Tilson's side attempt to see off their hosts.

"It's a huge game so of course I want to be involved," he said.

"It's hard to say if I will be out this stage but I'll be keeping everything crossed because I would be gutted to miss out."

But should the former Tottenham Hotspur goal-getter keep his place in the side he will be going into the game in a positive frame of mind.

"I've spoken to people who are really disappointed with us drawing 0-0 and I don't really understand their reaction," he said.

"Of course we would rather be going into the second leg with a lead behind us but it wasn't to be.

"The tie is still very much alive though and we're really looking forward to going there.

"We're confident too because of the way we've been playing lately and if we play like we have been doing over the last few months of the season then I think we have a great chance of beating Doncaster and getting through to the final at Wembley, which would just be amazing."

What a fantastic night of football at The Hall on Friday, great idea too hand out flag's & balloons which added to a brilliant atmosphere inside the ground (it also helped by the fact that i was sat next to a prettest of young shrimpett's, 'proudly' modeling a shirt!!). Like against Man U Flav's was brilliant, I have to say Donnie played well, and didn't give Macca & Bails any space to get on the ball, was it me or did Donnie get the run of the ball?? even so i thought our back four soaked up the pressure pretty well. Robson-Kuna to get the winner Fri???

With reference to the Second Leg at Doncaster.
Should not Kevin Maher be in the squad. Our most experienced (and still best) player would prove a great asset to have on the bench.

Can ayone tell me who would play if any of our centre half were unable to play? I think its a good job they have kept fit and been disciplined all season. Another thought for second leg, Bailey won't play 2 games in a row not at his best, watch him go in the second leg.

Who said Carlisle would be the easiest route??
Is it a question of more pressure being on the home team??, is it a question of the pressure being on the favourites?? I hope so !!
Fair point Leeroy about Bailey, but i think on Friday Donnie crowded the midfield too much and stopped Macca & Bails playing their normal game, it'll be differant Friday!!
Up The Shrimpers!!!!!!!!!

Re: If our cemtre backs aren't fit.

We have Liptak who I've seen play in the reserves and Essex senior cup. He looks pretty good, looks good on the ball and scores alot from corners. I'm surprised he wasn't given a run out against Port Vale, but he may have been injured. Simon Francis can also play centre half.

Understand how Lee felt about not coming off, but with hindsight it may have been better being replaced at half time and maybe put less stress on the injury, better to be out for 45 mins instead of the whole of round 2. However, trust Lee is fit to play. Good result I suppose last Friday, but hey, come on Blues we can go 1 or 2 or 3 better this Friday. I am longing to see the new Wembley.

I'm afraid i've not often seen liptak's name on the subs bench and don't thimk we will on friday. Thats why Clarkie and Barrett have to keep playing as well as they have done and stay fit and out of trouble. The fact that we no other centre halfs with much first team experience or match practice is a slight worry! Another clean sheet on Friday please and a moment of magic at their end! Come on the blues!
