West Ham
Mixed day for Tomka
BASILDON youngster James Tomkins has admitted to having mixed feelings after playing at Old Trafford for the first time in his flourishing West Ham career.
The 19-year-old defender made his fifth Premier League appearance for the Irons in Saturday's 4-1 defeat.
And although he was left disappointed by the result Tomkins, who attended Chalvedon School in Pitsea, far from disgraced himself in front of more than 76,000 fans at the Theatre of Dreams.
"Obviously there is a lot of room for improvement, but I was fairly pleased with my performance," the teenager, who recovered from making a mistake that led to United's second goal to produce a largely assured display, told whutv.
"Playing at Old Trafford is unbelievable and to give half a decent performance was even more unbelievable.
"It was fairly happy but I was disappointed to end up losing."
Tomkins and his team-mates fell into a 3-0 deficit after just 27 minutes of Saturday's clash and, despite clawing a goal back through Dean Ashton's overhead kick and seeing the Reds' Nani sent-off, former Hammer Michael Carrick completed a comfortable victory after half-time.
"When you're 3-0 down in the first half-an-hour it's a long way back against teams like United," he added.
"We dug in but the fourth goal knocked the wind out of us a little bit, so overall we're a little bit disappointed. They've got quality players all through their team and our errors didn't help, but let's not under-estimate how good their players are."
