Green light for £53m new hospital in Grays

A NEW community hospital in Thurrock costing £53 million has been given the go-ahead.

East of England NHS - the strategic health authority responsible for deciding future healthcare needs in the region - has approvedplans submitted by NHS South West Essex.

East of England NHS agreed that current community hospital and healthcare facilities in Thurrock restricted patient choice and were not capable of meeting future population pressures.

The hospital will be located on land on the northern fringe of Grays town centre. Thurrock Thames Gateway Development Corporation has assumed responsibility for site assembly. Some of the land has already been purchased and the Corporation is in negotiation with other land owners to secure the whole site.

Barbara Stuttle, deputy chief executive of South West Essex Primary Care Trust said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to be able to develop 21st Century healthcare facilities which will enable us to provide high quality services to the population of Thurrock.

"This will become the flagship for modern healthcare in a modern facility provided by excellent staff.”

Tom Gardiner, director of delivery at the Development Corporation said: “A new health facility in Grays will make a massive contribution towards the development corporation’s goal of providing modern community infrastructure for the people of Thurrock. "The site will provide a superb location and with appropriate development will make a significant visual statement at the northern gateway to the town.”

Plans for the hospital were originally put forward in 2006 and were updated by the Primary care Trust in July 2008. It is expected include diagnostic services such X-ray, ultrasound and phlebotomy. There will also a community walk-in and minor injury unit, sexual health service, outpatient services, endoscopy, women and children’s services, intermediate and rehabilitation care as well as dental and pharmacy services.

Make Thurrock Better says...

Excellent news but we do need a full A&E and not just a minor injuries unit. A full A&E would ease the pressure at Basildon and enable both Basildon and Thurrock to serve the community better. Why does this plan fall short of that when it is so desperately needed???

hmm didn't we had all this at orsett. why not build a hospital when they could've kept orsett open. not that i would welcome a hospital in grays, lot nearer than basildon. where exactly is the northern fringe of grays town centre

Make Thurrock Better says...

I think the "northern fringes" in this case might mean the Titan Works site. Grays would be a good location as it is a major transport artery and better than Orsett was. I just hope it doesn't turn into a "minor this and minor that" which means you still have to go to Basildon for anythning more involved. I think we need a large scale fully operational hospital in Grays not a glorified clinic.

I live opposite where the hospital is going to be built, and I can say that I would not be for it at all. The road outside my flat is busy all the time especially first thing i nthe morning and last thing at night and with the hospital being built it is going to make it ten times worse.
Have they taken into consideration the thoughts and views of the people who live in the flats and who will have to see the hospital on a daily basis first thing in the morning and last thing at night.
Its a no go for me sorry!!!!!!

But ha look almost 20 years later they come up with this!!!!!!!!!!!.

Make Thurrock Better says...

There will almost always be someone who is inconvenienced by being close to a fire/police station or hospital but we all need these things.

I someimes do wonder at the developers who throw up flats on any busy corner or road and never think what life could be like for the residents. The retirement flats in Cramavill Street for instance opposite a garage and surrounded by shops which attract youths hanging out until late at night buying chips and drinking cheap booze. How suitable was that particular corner as a place for elderly residents who are likely to be intimidated by the youths and to suffer from excess noise?

The new developments in Grays like the flats opposite the Piggs Corner complex. Slap bang onto a very busy junction. Why was that not kept for business use instead of residential? Every time a bit of spare land comes up more flats are being buit often in the knowledge that land close by will be developed into something eventually that the residents won't like.

The development of flats at the top end of Morrisons car park for instance is ridiculous. That would have been far better kept as a car park. Why would anyone want to live in supermarket car park?

Unfortunately this sort of bad judgment when flats are being built will lead to people feeling short changed when they realise that essential items like hosptials are being built nearby. It shows a distinct lack of long term planning for the area.

We need to build the equivalent of 5 Birmingham's to house the immigrants that are already here.

Its not very hard to get planning permission fore schools and hospitals but harder for housing in the numbers needed.

Solution close orsett hospital down and build houses on it then build another hospital government has both.

Shut down st chads school to build houses on and build new academy at bottom of chadwell hill.

Can anyone guess what will be done to junior school at top of chadwell hill, I bet houses or flats built on it followed by building of a new school a couple of years later government are housing the immigrants they need here to vote for them.
