Airport needs £36m

SOUTHEND Airport will need a cash injection of £36million to complete all its planned improvements in time for the 2012 Olympics.

Chairman Andrew Walters, speaking at the Thames Gateway Forum in London, said the cash was essential to complete the second phase of the airport expansion programme by the summer of 2011.

The expansion, which would be funded by private investment, includes the diversion of Eastwoodbury Lane for a longer runway and the use of some green belt land.

It was also revealed budget airline FlyBe would be increasing the number of commercial flights between Southend and Jersey from one a week to two.

The second phase is currently being studied by a joint committee of Southend and Rochford councillors together with airport and regeneration company Renaissance Southend.

Mr Walters said: "We are looking at an investment already committed of £12million for the new railway station.

"A further £12million for a new terminal is needed and another £12million to cover other contingencies and improvements."

Pigs might fly - but larger planes will always be restricted as the airport is too close to houses, retail park, and of course a golf course.
