A FUN day for rehomed dogs reached new heights this year, raising almost £2,000 to help abandoned canines.

The K9 Capers fun day, at Westley Heights, in Langdon Hills, saw 900 dogs and their owners get together to help a rescue kennels continue their vital work.

The event, now in its sixth year, raised a record-breaking £1,900 for Gemini Kennels, in Wickford, who care for and rehome the deserted dogs.

Michael Knight, owner of Gemini, who organised the event, said: “The money we raised is for the dogs we can’t rehome because we still have to accommodate them.

“This will help fund and modernise the kennels to keep the dogs in the quality of life they are now accustomed to.

“It’s fantastic news and I would like to thank everyone for their support, because without them things would certainly be more difficult for the dogs we can’t find homes for.”

The crowds of canine lovers were entertained by a dog show, where the animals were awarded with titles such as best rescued dog, and displays by majorette groups.

Information on how to look after the animals was also provided by 22 stalls, which included the PDSA and the Rottweiler Rescue Trust.

Mr Knight said: “There was lots of general advice on how to care for dogs from behavioural issues to providing a good environment.

“It’s also a chance to see the progress of the dogs that have been rehomed.

“It’s lovely for me and the kennels staff to see how the dogs are doing since they have been taken by their new owners.”
