MORE than twenty bags of rubbish, a TV set, two bicycles, an old tyre and several traffic cones were collected during a community clean-up.

Volunteers young and old rolled up their sleeves and busied themselves, tidying the area around Canvey Lake.

The clean-up was organised by environmental charity Groundwork South Essex as part of the Big Tidy-Up, a nationwide campaign to get communities involved in clearing up their areas.

Volunteers from environmental group, Green Grid, which regularly carries out clean-ups across south Essex, also helped out with the four-hour operation.

Greengrid taskforce officer Jackie Humberstone said: “The young people who helped with the clear up were very keen and enthusiastic about helping to improve this area where they live.

“We hope this will be the first of a number of opportunities for local people to get involved in improving this green space.”

Great job - well done. How do we stop those who put the things in in the first place from doing it again?
